The New Benchmark: Why DALI Retired the OBERON for the SONIK Series

Dali Oberon Series VS Sonik Series

March 6, 2026

For years, the DALI OBERON was the "safe bet" for anyone entering the world of high-fidelity audio. It was musical, forgiving, and incredibly well-built for the price. However, as of February 2, 2026, the OBERON has officially passed the torch.

The new DALI SONIK series isn't just an "S" version or a minor refresh; it is a fundamental rebuild using technologies previously reserved for the $100,000 DALI KORE.

1. The Heart of the Change: SMC Essential Technology

The biggest technical leap in the SONIK series is the inclusion of SMC Essential (Soft Magnetic Compound).

  • The Problem: Traditional iron magnets in speakers suffer from "eddy currents" and "hysteresis," which create a "braking" effect on the voice coil, leading to audible distortion.

  • The Solution: DALI’s patented SMC material is highly magnetic but non-electrically conductive. In the SONIK series, this reduces third-order harmonic distortion drastically.

  • The Result: You get a midrange that is significantly more transparent and "breathier" than the OBERON. Vocals sound like they are in the room with you, not coming out of a box.

2. "Clarity Cone" Wood Fiber Drivers

You’ll notice a new look to the iconic burgundy drivers. The SONIK series introduces Clarity Cone™ technology.

  • By adding a specific embossed geometric structure to the paper and wood-fiber blend, DALI has made the cones more rigid without adding weight.

  • This improves "transient response"—meaning when a drum hits, the speaker starts and stops faster, providing a tighter, punchier bass than the OBERON’s smoother, warmer low end.

3. The Hybrid Tweeter System (Models 7 & 9)

While the smaller models use an ultra-light 29mm soft dome, the larger SONIK 7 and SONIK 9 floorstanders borrow DALI's signature Hybrid Tweeter Module.

  • This module combines a traditional dome with a planar magnetostatic ribbon.

  • The dome handles the heavy lifting, while the ribbon kicks in at the highest frequencies to provide an "airy" soundstage and wide dispersion that makes the music feel like it's floating.

4. Modern Scandinavian Aesthetics

The OBERON was classic, but the SONIK is contemporary.

  • New Finishes: Available in Black Ash, Walnut, Natural Oak, and White.

  • Refined Details: The floorstanders now feature sleek aluminum outrigger feet, which don't just look better—they provide a more stable mechanical foundation for the cabinet, further reducing vibrations.

  • Magnetic Grilles: No more plastic pegs. The grilles snap on perfectly, keeping the front baffle clean if you prefer the "naked" driver look.
